Marseille is the third largest metropolitan area in France, after Paris and Lyon. To the east, you can see the small fishing village of Callelongue, on the outskirts of Marseille and stretching all the way to Cassis. Calanques, a rugged coastal area. You can opt for the sky from the mountain area of Sainte-Baume (1,147 m}. The city of Toulon and the French Riviera. North of Marseille, beyond the low Garlaban and Etoile mountain ranges, is the 1,011 m (3,317 ft) Mont Sainte Victoire. To the west of Marseille is the former artists' colony of l'Estaque; further west is the Côte Bleue, the Gulf of Lion and the Camargue region of the Rhône delta. The airport is northwest of the city at Marignane on the Étang de Berre.
In the Gulf of Marseille, there is the Frioul archipelago, which includes four islands, one of which, If, is the location of the Château d'If, made famous by Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo. The city's main commercial center intersects with Canebière on Rue St Ferréol and Center Bourse. Marseille city center has several pedestrian areas, notably Rue St Ferréol, Cours Julien near the Conservatory of Music, Cours Honoré-d'Estienne-d'Orves near the Old Port and the area around the Hôtel de Ville. Southeast of central Marseille, in the 6th arrondissement, is the Prefecture and the monumental fountain in Place Castellane.
